For the second year in a row, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced a coin with an incused strike. This edition of the Silver Maple Leaf has an incuse strike on both sides. The definition of incuse is having the image struck/recessed into a coin as opposed to the standard raised relief. The now classic Walter Ott-designed maple leaf image is displayed on the reverse and the image of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait is portrayed on the obverse.
Few mints have attempted a sunken design. The unique and unusual format makes them more challenging to strike and, thus, highly unusual in the marketplace.
